Dreaming Whilst Black: BBC Comedy Orders Second Series of Award-Winning Show

BBC Comedy is gearing up for another exciting season of Dreaming Whilst Black, a critically acclaimed series that has captured the hearts of viewers. The show, which features the talented Adjani Salmon as the star and co-creator, has been renewed for a second series that is set to commence filming later this year in the UK.

With its first series receiving widespread industry praise, Dreaming Whilst Black has already made a name for itself. The show garnered nominations from the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards and the NAACP Image Awards, solidifying its place as a breakout hit.

The story of Dreaming Whilst Black is loosely inspired by real-life events, following the journey of Kwabena, an aspiring filmmaker stuck in a dead-end recruitment job. The series explores the trials and tribulations that Kwabena faces as he takes the first step towards achieving his dream.

Adapted from the web series and acclaimed BBC pilot of the same name, Dreaming Whilst Black has propelled Adjani Salmon to new heights in the industry. Salmon, who won the 2022 BAFTA for Emerging Talent: Fiction and Screen International Star of Tomorrow for the pilot, continues to shine in her role.

With its remarkably compelling storyline and exceptional performances, Dreaming Whilst Black has received significant recognition. In addition to its BAFTA-winning co-creator, the series also garnered nominations in the International Emmys and the Broadcast Awards, solidifying its place as a standout production.

When asked about the response to the series, Adjani Salmon commented, "The response to Dreaming Whilst Black has been overwhelmingly loving, raucous and humbling. I'm blessed that we have a chance to entertain da peopledem again. Like season one, our goal is to end up being shared in the Aunties WhatsApp Groups."

Jon Petrie, the Director of Comedy Commissioning at the BBC, expressed his excitement about the decision to renew the series, stating, "Dreaming Whilst Black really resonated with BBC viewers who felt the warmth and humour radiating from Adjani Salmon's brilliant comic creation. It was a no brainer for us to press go again on this multi-award-winning series and we can't wait to see more."

The show's Executive Producer, Dhanny Joshi of Big Deal Films, also shared his enthusiasm, saying, "Dreaming Whilst Black season one struck a chord with audiences all over, offering a dose of relatable chaos, hard truths, and laughs in between. We couldn't be more excited to go again and give the people what they want - a second season."
