Vile Monarch and Ravenscourt introduce Floodland, a post-catastrophic survival city builder set in Earth's devastated wetlands.

The world's sea levels are rising dramatically due to the consequences of man-made climate change and a resulting chain of disasters, plunging humanity into a new dark age. A brand new teaser released today at Gamescom in Germany gives a glimpse into the events that led to the catastrophe that set humanity back hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

The game is being developed by Polish studio Vile Monarch, founded by Kacper Kwiatkowski and Grzegorz Mazur, who both worked on "This War of Mine."

"Grzegorz and I came up with the idea for Floodland when we were discussing conventions that are unexplored in games – one of which is the 'full-blown and realistic post-apocalypse'; with examples in other media such as The Road, Children of Men or even The Walking Dead; in games, The Last of Us would come closest," says Kwiatkowski.

"It seemed particularly timely and important to us to use these kinds of stories to discuss the challenges of today's world," he added.

Players start on the edge of a flooded city and must lead their small group of nomads to rebuild society from the ground up. To do this, you'll explore the remains of the flooded city, search for clues to resources, learn basic skills in agriculture and fishing, and transform a group of stragglers living in tents in a swamp into a thriving city.

Players do this by constructing and expanding new buildings, repurposing old buildings, and exploring "new" technologies (or relearning old technologies) to overcome the numerous challenges they face. But humans are human beings, and the larger their settlement becomes – and the more inhabitants it has – the greater the likelihood that societal problems will arise, meaning that they may face the same problems as in the old world.

Floodland will be released on Steam and GOG on 16th November, 2022.
