Jenna Ortega's Wednesday: Unravelling her Nevermore School Uniform
Jenna Ortega's Wednesday is the perfect embodiment of a mysterious and spooky teenager, and fans have fallen in love with her many looks from the new Netflix series, including her Nevermore Academy school uniform. While Nevermore's other students wear a uniform defined by its purple striped blazer, Wednesday rocks a muted black and grey version, because she's allergic to colour!
When it comes to Wednesday's school uniform, costume designer Colleen Atwood wanted to create something unique and memorable. Initially, she was looking for striped fabric, but found it to be too flat for the camera. Instead, Atwood opted to create a custom silk-screened fabric with varying shades of gray. This allowed for a more irregular stripe pattern, which looks amazing on camera.
To give Wednesday's uniform a truly individual silhouette, Atwood and her codesigner Mark Sutherland made some clever tweaks. The skirt is longer and fuller than the other students, and is made up of many individual pieces, including strips of fabric laid on top of each other. When Wednesday moves, the skirt separates, revealing different fabrics. But when she stands still, it all closes together to form one cohesive look. The jacket is fitted, with sleeves hanging out and cuffs open to give Wednesday a well defined look. But perhaps the most distinguishing feature of Wednesday's school uniform is her oversized shoes. Colleen Atwood chose Prada Monolith Brushed Leather Lace-Ups to give Wednesday an extra edge.
Overall, Wednesday's Nevermore uniform is the perfect combination of spooky and stylish. And we can't help but think that Wednesday would be proud of what the costume designers came up with.
