A Sumatran tiger cub named Lestari recently celebrated her first birthday at West Midlands Safari Park, marking a significant milestone for both her and the conservation of her endangered species. Lestari, born on the 4th of July, 2023, is the first Sumatran tiger cub ever born at the park, making her arrival all the more special.

Lestari's journey hasn't been without hurdles. Shortly after her birth, she was diagnosed with a condition affecting her front limbs, requiring a physiotherapy program. Over the course of three weeks, Lestari diligently underwent various exercises and used walking aids to strengthen her legs. The dedication and expertise of the park's team paid off, as Lestari now moves normally, running, leaping, and playing with the energy and grace that tigers are known for.

Lestari's birthday festivities were filled with delightful treats fit for a tiger queen. Keepers prepared a cake made from frozen goat's milk and meat chunks, ensuring a delicious and engaging experience for the birthday girl. Additionally, Lestari enjoyed blood ice blocks and large boomer balls, which she used as toys, including one for splashing around in pools.

While Lestari's birthday celebration is undoubtedly a joyous occasion, it also serves as a reminder of the critical situation faced by Sumatran tigers in the wild. With fewer than 400 individuals left, these majestic creatures are classified as critically endangered, primarily due to habitat loss and poaching. Lestari's birth and survival offer hope and inspiration in the ongoing efforts to protect and conserve this iconic species.

The successful introduction of Lestari to her father, Nakal, was a crucial milestone for her development. The bond formed between Lestari and Nakal promotes a sense of familial connection, showcasing the natural dynamics and behavior of Sumatran tigers. Visitors to West Midlands Safari Park now have the opportunity to witness this incredible family unit up close and personal in the Tiger Tropics area. By observing Lestari and her parents, the public can gain a deeper understanding of the importance of tiger conservation and the steps being taken to ensure their survival for generations to come.
