M&S Cafes: A Deliciously Sustainable Solution for Plastic Packaging
Marks & Spencer, the iconic British retailer known for its commitment to sustainability, has once again made headlines with its latest eco-friendly initiative. In a bid to tackle plastic waste, M&S has removed over 4 million units of plastic packaging from its cafes across the UK. This exciting development comes as part of the company's ongoing efforts to meet its ambitious Plan A targets.
One of the key changes implemented by M&S involves replacing plastic packaging with cardboard or paper alternatives for their popular sandwich selection packs and toasties. Not only does this move reduce plastic usage by a staggering 79%, but it also maintains the same level of quality and variety for customers.
Lucinda Langton, Head of Sustainability at M&S Food, highlights the significance of this packaging transformation, stating, “Our sandwiches and toasties in M&S Cafes are particularly popular options as customers look to sit down and relax when shopping with us. With a brand-new menu for 2024, came an opportunity to innovate in our packaging - removing and reducing unnecessary plastic, to lower our impact on the planet. We know plastic is an issue our customers care deeply about and this small change to packaging in our Cafés - with no compromise on quality or taste - will make a big impact on our Plan A roadmap to net zero.”
This bold move is not the first time M&S has addressed plastic packaging concerns. The company previously introduced 100% recyclable takeaway coffee cups and achieved its target of removing 75 million plastic units four months ahead of schedule. By implementing the new recyclable paper packaging in over 300 M&S Cafes, the retailer estimates that it will eliminate 4.5 million units of plastic annually. This move supports M&S' ambitious Plan A goal of removing 1 billion plastic units by 2027 on the path to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Furthermore, M&S has also unveiled an exciting new Café menu for 2024, catering to a diverse range of dietary preferences. The menu features an array of delicious and innovative options, including more vegan and gluten-free choices. Customers can now enjoy mouthwatering treats such as the gluten-free Tomato, Mozzarella & Basil Pesto Toastie, the Very Veggie vegan Toastie, the vegan Avocado & Rainbow Veg Sandwich, and the High Protein Maple Pancake Stack topped with 0% fat Greek yogurt and berries.
With its latest packaging revolution and tantalising menu additions, M&S Cafés are proving that sustainability and culinary excellence can go hand in hand. By providing customers with delectable food options that are both eco-friendly and socially conscious, M&S continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating a better, more sustainable future.
