Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is back after nearly 95 years and stars in an all-new short to celebrate Disney 100 Years of Wonder
After 94 years, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit has returned to Walt Disney Animation Studios in an all-new animated short. This short, titled “Oswald The Lucky Rabbit,” was created by Disney Animation’s hand-drawn animation team to mark the beginning of Disney's 100 Years of Wonder marking the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company. It was directed by acclaimed animator Eric Goldberg and produced by Emmy Award-winning producer Dorothy McKim. Along with the launch of the short, Disney is also introducing an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Snapchat lens that uses AR technology, giving users the opportunity to channel the animated character.
“On the eve of Disney’s 100th anniversary, it was such a joy to create the first new Oswald short from our studio since 1928,” says McKim. “Our hand-drawn animation team – including our hand-drawn legends Mark Henn, Randy Haycock and Eric Goldberg, as well our wonderful team of 2D apprentices, had a ball animating in the style of Oswald’s era.”
“Oswald is such a plucky scamp. We wanted to bring Oswald back, and in the short, he literally returns to his original home, the movie screen,” says Goldberg. “We wanted to have Oswald do all of the ‘squash-and-stretch,’ ‘rubber hose’-animation style, celebrating that first generation of Walt Disney’s artists.”
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit has a long, storied history. He was introduced to moviegoers in 1927 with the short “Trolley Troubles” and went on to star in 26 Disney shorts until 1928, when Walt Disney lost creative control of the character. In 2006, a deal between Disney and NBC/Universal saw the return of Oswald to his original home, and since then he has appeared in video games and merchandise, an animated short, and in Disney theme parks around the world.
