In the world of scale modeling, nostalgia often reigns supreme. There's something special about recreating classic pieces of military history with your own hands, reliving the glory days of the past. And now, Airfix has brought back a true icon of Britain's post-war defense system - the Bristol Bloodhound.
The Bristol Bloodhound took center stage during the Cold War, standing as a symbol of the nation's integrated air defense protection. Its role was vital in safeguarding the V-bomber nuclear deterrent force from potential hostile air attacks. This surface-to-air missile system was in service from 1958 to 1991, a testament to its enduring impact.
What sets the Bristol Bloodhound apart is not just its historical significance, but also the meticulous attention to detail in Airfix's Vintage Classics range. Originally tooled in 1971, this kit is a collector's dream. It even features a pack illustration by the renowned Airfix artist Roy Cross, adding an extra touch of artistic flair.
Building the Bristol Bloodhound is a captivating experience. With 96 pieces and a skill level 2 rating, it strikes the perfect balance between challenge and accessibility. The completed model measures 180mm in length and 92mm in width at a 1:76 scale, making it a visually striking addition to any display.
For scale modelers, this is more than just a kit revival; it's a blast from the past. It has been 15 years since the last release of the Bristol Bloodhound, and its return is generating excitement throughout the community. Enthusiasts and collectors alike are eager to get their hands on this iconic piece of history once again.
Imagine sitting at your workbench, surrounded by paints, brushes, and the smell of plastic cement. As you carefully assemble each piece, you can't help but feel a connection to the brave men and women who defended our skies decades ago. It's a chance to honour their legacy and pay tribute to their unwavering dedication.
The Bristol Bloodhound is more than just a scale model kit; it's a portal to another time. It allows hobbyists to delve into the past, immerse themselves in the stories of the Cold War, and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those who served.

I made this Airfix model in 1961. How can it have been originally tooled in 1971?
You are right in saying Airfix produced the Bristol Bloodhound kit originally in 1960, but this was in 1/72 scale. In 1971 it was re-issued in 00 scale (1/76).
As this latest re-issue is also 1/76 scale, this is why it is a re-issue of the 1971 tooling and not the earlier Bristol Bloodhound release. It's all a little confusing, but this is where the mix-up comes from!
